about
It feels appropriate to release this song on the eve of entering the studio to record my next album, with the same sympathetic cast that brought Trembling Frames to life. Where that album was necessarily ruminative and rueful, these new songs explore possibility, gratitude, and wonder - tempered and “cured” (if only!) by the last decade’s walk through the alchemical fire. “Dogsbody” stands on, or hangs from, the precipice, looking back upon that version of me (and those that preceded him) with sorrow, yes - but also a new capacity for compassion.
I dedicate it to those who walk through this world carrying a burden they did not choose…in other words, everyone. May we all have the good fortune and courage to lay ours gently to rest, in due time.
Love + mystery,
LB
lyrics
Dogsbody – how much do you reckon is owed you?
Dogsbody – credulity strains at the sound
Working hound – why would your master disown you?
I remain faithfully yours, fatefully bound
Dogsbody – it pains me, but this marks our parting
Dogsbody – though I knew that our pact would expire
Dog for hire – too dull and dimwitted for guarding
A brute beast breaks, that’s all it takes to retire
No words aloud
Jaw square, head bowed
Be grateful for your meager lot
Dogsbody
I’ll allow – you’re a glutton for punishment, darling
But we’ve no use for an aging dogsbody now
No words aloud
Jaw square, head bowed
Keep on digging though you don’t know how
‘Cos we’ve got no use for an old dogsbody now
