about
This song — recorded at Crackle & Pop Studio in Seattle with my pals Johnny Sangster, Daniel Walker, Aaron Harmonson, and Eric Eagle — actually dates back to 2014 or so, a harbinger of the harmonic and lyrical content that came into full flower on Trembling Frames. We never got around to recording it during the TF sessions, and it sat on my pile of regrets (I’ve had a few) until we dusted it off in April 2019 and gave it a proper burial. Nearly two years and one pandemic later, it’s finally time to roll away the stone.
Originally conceived as a “good love gone bad” rumination (lord knows we’ve got enough of those), I’ve come to better understand it as a projection of shadow, and a grim grappling with the truth of “wherever you go, there you are.” As Emitt Rhodes (RIP) once put it, “The mirror always knows.” Let the real work begin.
I humbly submit this offering to you, my friends, on this first Bandcamp Friday of the year of our lord, twenty twenty-one. I hope you enjoy it. Artwork, as ever, by my friend Shawn Wolfe.
Yours, in love + mystery,
LB
lyrics
You say you're lonely
Yeah, well, I've been better too
I got hung up on a notion
And it's keeping me blue
Began as a whisper
But it built into a roar
That seductive deception of
"There must be something more"
Once there might've been
If I had considered it before
Now there's no use running
When you're already caught
And there's no returning
What you already bought
Embrace it or not
The nights filled with passion
And the days, a sort of bliss
How a trusted companion
Can become your nemesis
I couldn't have dreamt
That it would ever come to this
Now there's no use running
When you're already caught
And there's no returning
What you already bought
Embrace it or not
It's a maxim that I've found to be true
Who'd have ever thought
I'd be enchanted by a monster like you
Now there's no use running
When you're already caught
And there's no returning
What you already bought
There's no use running
And there's no returning
Yeah, there's no returning
What you already bought
Like it or not
